i have seen a couple of pics before of scratch bulit tyranid ships for BFG

after looking at my bits box i decided i had enough for a large fleet.
but i have no idea whats good or bad.
or what parts to use as what weapon.

so which ships and weapons are a must?
and which should be avoided?

and finally how should i go about making them?

hopefully others that had taken on the same sort of project will be able to give abit of helpful info and maybe pics of ships they have made to a beginner

Fighters are made from old lictors tentacles and epic dominiatrix head.
As for old hiveship, I posted it here and it occured to me , thx to many suggestions, that it look kinda silly. Like a giant bug in space :roll:

What I'm going with...

Devourers = Pryo Acidic Batteries.
Spine fists = Bio Plasma
DeathSpitter = Engine Thrusters
Barbed Strangler = Engine Thrusters
Adrenal Glands = Assault Boats
Toxin Sacs = Fighters/Torpedoes

You NEED Hiveships, literally. They are the brains of the operation, and you can only field cruisers if you have enough hiveships to babysit them. Not to mention that Hive ships are one of the best carrier ships in the game.

Krakens S6 Batteries and permanent Brace For Impact type save on an escort.

Vanguard Drones - not impressive for their armament, but they spot for the fleet allowing you to target anything within 15cm of them. It's an ability not to be underestimated.

Escort Drones - individually the worst ship in the fleet, but you can field them with bioplasma for 15 points.
May the Emperor have mercy on any ship fool enough to get within 15cm of my 10 strong Escort Drone Formation

Cruisers Because you need soemthing to distract the enemy away from your hive ships. You can get a cruiser nicely kitted out for 130pts

Depends on what you have on hand, or what your willing to invest in.

Escort Drones are a trio of gaunt/stealer scything limbs with a head. I hate the GW model personally, but I got 2 blisters on the cheap so I use them.

There is no official Kraken model, so it's entirely up to your imagination.
I'm using a guant devourer as the prow and a portion of the mostrous scything talons as a body, with some of the chitin plates for flavor. I saw someone else do it and was happy with the look. Since I'm using a bunch of Monstrous scything talons for my cruisers, I had the bits to spare.

Vanguard Drones look like a trio of scything talons attached to a devourer, so that's simple and cheap to replicate.

The new metal Cruisers literally looks like they glued some plastic bits together and cast it. Monstrous Scythign Talons, a pair of Death Spitters, a Barbed Strangler, and a Warrior Torso. The warrior torso is the tricky bit to get. I was debating on trying out a genestealer torso in it's place, but I was able to secure some warrior torsos, without having to resort to buying box sets.

The Hive ship is the tricky bit. You can't just glue bits together to make it. You either have to pony up for the GW model or break out the sculpting supplies. Admittedly though, the Hive Ship is the easiest thing in the fleet to sculpt your own. Crumple some alluminum foil into a vaugley hive ship shaped log and cover it in clay. They add weapon details and some little detials here and there. It's almost in the same class as making an ork hulk, except that there is an attractive GW model available in the Hiveships case.

Is that a good way to represent each weapon?
And does that cover all the options?

At the moment I have 1 and a half weeks to get a fleet in space.
Got good ideas for the bodies but still unsure about all the weapons
