I can't seem to stay 100% focused. I still need to revisit my gaunts and Fex to put in some more details/clean up...but today I realized I was working on my last Trygon as if I was in a trance.

I'm thinking of using something like the beetle below for inspiration/where I'd like to go...we'll see how it turns out

Now I know it could be cleaner, but does the mic of colors in the patina for the carapace seem properly beetle like? I'd originally thought about doing something else but have been falling in the direction as I paint.

In my experience shiny beetles seem to be the most shiny in the center of their carapace. So if I'd try to make a beetle carapace I'd probably start with some metal/color mix like yours and use some transparent color like smoke to darken the edges. Yours looks interesting too, but more like some exotic metal carapace, except for the black dots (but the heck, why not ? Tyranids can grow anything!).

The beetle in your picture looks more like simple black and brow with a little blending to a dark flesh like tone at it's center and then a clever application of dull, satin and gloss varnish.
