This is part of the narrative from a campaign we played some years ago. I thought perhaps soem might enjoy it.

Quote:
Lord Commanders,
A deep listening post near the border of the Segmentum Obscurus
intercepted a partial transmission of alien
origins<REF:alien/xenocide/eldar> Emanating from an unsurveyed planet.
The imperial navy sent a small scout vessel to reconnoiter the planet
and determine what, if any, significant threat these aliens posed to
imperial operations within the sector.

The Ship encountered no alien resistance (hivefleet or otherwise)
but did register indications of a planetside alien craft. They landed
to investigate and all contact with them has been lost. It is unknown
whether they fell victim to instrument malfunction, the eldar or the
tyranid creature.

The Techno Magus enabled the decryption of the alien signal but only
the visual was adequately rendered. Some garbled musical audio has been
partially translated
"cheapamair Cuar-Karan Ishar-Nanar...." This literally translated means
..think huge hunting mother spider. An apparent reference to the video
creature. If this assessment is correct we may have the first evidence
of the "female" tyrant.
Temporary classification: Examena Rigina (swarm mother)

This image shows a class of tyranid unlike any observed in our
studies.
Data Base: ERROR
Specific Image: http://gallery.warpshadow.com/harbinger/swarmmother

This is obviously a creature from the Harbinger Hivefleet, too many
significant similarities exist, but it's classification is unknown.

Forces of Lt. Lettil IG are moving to secure the planet and expunge
any tyranid infestations, we hope that this specimen will be recovered
for examination.

Further information will be forwarded as it is obtained.

Honored Chief Librarian Lord Liche,
I bring you news of the events on ArgurX. Mission success with heavy
casualties, including Lt. Lettil who fell attempting to eradicate the
organism.
Reports from his second are quite disturbing and the data has yet to be
fully investigated but preliminary indications are most dire.
The tyranids have apparently learned that full scale assaults are
unnecessary against worlds with little or no sentient life. This creature
seems to form the vanguard of a slow infestation and possibly creates what
we would term supply depots.

Magos Biologis Salk has been studying the Auspex reading forwarded to us for
the past two days and feels that he may understand how the fleets manage to
"remove" the incalculable amounts of material from conquered worlds. REF:
MBf:/Tyranid/Ecology/PlanetaryConsumption But cryptic as ever he has yet to
enlighten the remainder of the staff.

You will receive a coded transmission containing the hivemind signal of the
new creature for addition into your database. The signal is quite powerful
even from one such creature and reaches into the vastness of space and the
warp. Similar disturbances have been associated with genestealer cults on
some worlds. Please pass this information on to those you trust. Once
complete, our database will contain a detailed analysis, and barring further
stonewalling from Salk his theory.

Initial battlefield data indicates that the previous threat level assigned
to the organism was conservative and it ranks in the highest order.
Employing fearsome weapons and unseen abilities. I will forward this data
as well once Lord Tarkus approves it.

Honored Chief Librarian Lord Liche and others of the Honored
Council,
Following the dictates of the Great Wyrm Tarkus, I bring you further
news of the events on ArgurX. Preliminary reports of Success with the
mission have been found to be overly optimistic. At the heated behest
of Magos Biologis Salk Commissar Valger assumed command for the forces
due to incompetence on the part of Lt. Eidler, who succeeded Lt. Lettil
after he fell in battle. Despite complete briefing on the scope of the
tyranid threats in occupied systems Lt. Eidler (deceased) failed to
carry out even the most cursory examinations of the planet.
A tyranid carried plague has also infected 31% of the 250,000 men
stationed there and as yet we have been unable to devise a treatment
method which is functional on the frail biologies of the guardsmen.
Mortality rates are as high as 97%. I fear they have been doomed by
their leaders lack of knowledge.
Another concern has come to light in the reports from Commissar
Valger. Yet another tyranid organism and a tyranid "tool" have been
reported and images forwarded to analysis. [See file links at the start
of this report]
The creature appears to be a deviation of the basic Preafectea
Cerebrumea or Zoanthrope. But differs so drastically that we have
delayed any speculative nomenclature until a specimen can be delivered.
Once again it shows many similarities to Harbinger strains.
Of even greater concern are the pods which were discovered when the
creature was engaged. These appear to function in a manner similar to
the teleport cysts described by marine assault survivors who board
hiveships. Over 70 have been located and destroyed all of them radiate
out from the central hive which is still lifeless. However the planet
is completely in jeopardy due to the extremely rapid diffusion of the
tyranids into the biome. When the swarm mother was killed all organized
hostilities from the creatures ceased, but there is significant evidence
that this is a lull of rebuilding. All the pods have been defended by
lesser Termagauntii to the death, only the more advanced creatures have
been seen to make use of the pods ability.
This adds a level of cunning to the battlefield seldom associated
with tyranids. It seems likely that this infestation is an attempt to
procure all planetary resources without committing a complete assault.
That indicates unprecedented threat assessment.

Magos Salk has yet to complete his report on the Auspex readings but he
has given some clues as to his findings. It is his theory that the
hivemind shifts the organic constituents of the planet into the warp.
He has several supporting facts on this but hasn't made the complete
presentation available. I will of course relay it to you once it has
been approved by Great Wyrm Tarkus.

Honored Chief Librarian Lord Liche and others of the Honored
Council,
Following the dictates of the Great Wyrm Tarkus, I bring you further
news of the events on ArgurX.
Under the sure hand of Commissar Valger and with the considerable might
of the Adeptus Mechanicus contingent and members of the 3rd Cohort Draco
Legion significant victories have been achieved.
I am relaying another unknown organism to you. This creature is
encountered whenever hive complexes are attacked. It should be placed
in a similar threat level classification as a tyrant or carnifex and has
several unusual properties. Preliminary reports on the most complete
carcasses of these creatures to be examines by the Magos Biologis
contingent on ArgurX indicate the following.
Theoretically and offshoot of the Tyranicus Cruentusea [Carnifex]

7-9 meters tall, 5000 kg
Subcutaneous tissues are infested with tyranidic midges which viciously
attack any non-tyranidic creatures which venture near the carcass or a
living tyranid with a similar colony.
Able to withstand massive structural and internal trauma before
succumbing to lethal wounds [6 Ps5 Laser cannon penetrations and
multiple Hellstorm Heavy Bolter impacts]. Ability to rapidly borrow
through soil and sedentary rock is attributed to unclassified molecular
disruption possibly similar to that used in the denuding of worlds.

Progress has been made in the formulation of a vaccine for the ArgurX
tyranidic plague infecting the troops. No cure has been discovered but
the serum isolated from the indigenous species found to be immune have
provided a viable preventive measure. All data required for replication
will be forwarded once quarantine protocols have been satisfied.

Temporary classification: Nidus-Deprecari Hive Warden

Honored Chief Librarian Lord Liche and others of the Honored Council,

Commissar Valger informs us that the subterranean assault performed against
the tyranidic hives have met with admirable success. Joint militant forces
from the Talos Forge world, penal legions (sent by order of Great Wyrm
Tarkus), currently quarantined Imperial units and recently arrived Draco
Legion Marines from the 3rd cohort have destroyed 2 fullhives. Principle in
these undertakings have been the antiquated imperial Mole, Termite, and
Hellbore. Allowing assault forces and penal legions entry into the bowels
of the terrestrial biocomplex.

The vaccine for this ArgurX form of tyranidic plague have proven quite
effective, hope exists that this may be the basis from some preventive
measures against other strains, as well as a possible biological agent
against the tyranids themselves.

Nidus-Deprecari or 'Hive Warden' activity has greatly increased and several
transports have been intercepted with complete loss of personnel and
materials.

Magos Biologis Salk, Head of Xenobiology:NewHallefuss has also begun a
systematic analysis of the alien biome created within the, as he puts it,
"terrestrial equivalent of the space faring norn queens" These hives are
DIRECTLY connected to the teleport nodes discovered earlier by subterranean
tethers and thus are quite likely to be the decedents of the creatures first
cataloged by Space Wolf scouts during the initial attacks against the
hivefleets. Moreover these hives are used directly to draw geothermal
energy from the planet core by sending a hollow "tap root" several miles
into the bedrock. This is filled with millions of gallons of tyrgel which
draws immense amounts of thermal energy from the planet. Having an
internal area of over 200 cubic km and a population in excess of 2 million
tyranidic creatures high yield ordnance and special tactical munitions have
proven exceptionally valuable. The hives are more treacherous than
underhives and pose great peril to any personnel which enter them. tens of
thousands of eggs have been found in the brood chambers which are protected
with unspeakable ferocity by the tyranid guardians.

One an analysis of the hive structure and viable/effective tactics is
complete it will be added to the Magoc Biologis Data File System.

[Standard Construct Templates for Mole Morter systems, Moles, Termites and
Hellbore subterranean transports may be accessed by authorized personnel.
Production of these machines should be increased to maximum in all capable
systems] Grand Artificer Keplar, Talos Forge World
