I don't know if this is entirelyrealistic, but here it is.

Imperial History of the World of Icarus Tertia
Human settlers found Icarus Tertia in the early 41st millennium. 100 people were cramped into the dark confines of the settlers’ ship, having set out from the lost world of Caricus after the Ork invasion of WAAAGH! Gruzbad crushed the PDF and orbital stations. A solitary shuttle escaped the carnage, its human cargo fervently wishing to find a new world to live in peace.

Of all the worlds they could have settled on, they chose the barren ice-world of Icarus, a black mark in the Icarus system. Icarus Prima was a volatile world, the elliptical orbit it travelled through plunging it into searing summers that burnt every living thing to cinders, and freezing winters reminiscent of the ice ages of prehistoric Holy Terra.

Icarus Seconda had a more stable orbit, and was a verdant green world of fertile land, with a pure atmosphere. Icarus Quadria had a perfectly circular orbit, if a slow one. The conditions were similar to those of Icarus Seconda, another perfect world for the settlers. Icarus Quintria was an icy world, but not harsh and vicious, and the roots of plants were beneath the layer of snow.

But Icarus Tertia had an irregular orbit. It was as if in one half of the orbit the very planet itself was trying to escape the grasp of the system’s small sun, and on the other half it was attempting to pull itself into fiery oblivion.

Nevertheless, the settlers felt compelled to land near a mountain on Icarus Tertia. When they landed they fell upon the ship, ripping it apart with the tools they had managed to bring with them. After this frenzy, none of the humans could remember exactly why they condemned themselves to a life of toil in the harsh conditions, or why they even chose the planet to settle.

Little did they know that they had condemned themselves to more than endless labour…

The Daemon
In time the people built houses and claimed land, marking it out with fences and walls. But as the people got comfortable, a daemon struck; a hideous man-beast with razor sharp claws and a bounding leap. Taller than a full grown man, the creature stalked the unwary, and the mutilated corpses of humans and farm animals had a horrible impact on the terrified settlers. Gangs of men took their farm tools and rifles and tried to kill the creature, but none ever succeeded.

Then the beast came out of the shadows one night and ripped the side of a house in two, and the next morning the people were gone. There was no sign of a struggle, but there were streaks of blood and a red trail in the snow. Every able-bodied man and boy that could carry a weapon set out to follow the trail, which wound its way towards the mountain. As the party moved onwards they noticed a distinct change in the flora-instead of the usual squat, dark-leafed trees, the ground was studded with mushroom-like mounds that seemed to pulsate and beat, like hearts. The group pressed on, intent on finding the brutal beast and slaughtering it.

As time wound on, the flora changed once again. Dotting the mountainside were taller stalks, much taller than a man, which looked more like something animal than plant-like. They too pulsated, and had something resembling mouths at the top that stretched upward, wide open, drew in the air and pulling downwards again, breathing in. The number of these increased until the men were in a forest of gulping tree-mouths. One in every four or five was randomly mutated, some sporting an extra mouth, others coated in black carapace that glistened with an unholy chemical, the next upon closer inspection, composed of millions of thin threads that formed a single ‘tree’.

As the sun dwindled and faded onto the horizon, lamps were lit, and as the men roamed higher the number of mutated pumps increased, until nearly every single one was different from the rest. They stopped to rest, and that’s when it started.

Someone saw a flash of black through the pumps. Then another, and another. The people stood and readied their weapons, not realising the magnitude of the danger they were in. Then the flora exploded with creatures, and they fell wildly upon the humans. Several were gunned down but there were too many to kill. And then the daemon appeared. Striding across the snow and ice, it radiated an aura of control, and the beasts around it attacked in a more coordinated fashion.

Every man trained his weapon on the daemon, and bullets and lasblasts tore into it. But onwards it came, not flinching or slowing. A young farmer who had acquired a Mk 3 plasma gun turned the weapon on the beast, a superheated blast of plasma erupting from the barrel and illuminating the battleground, but the monster leapt over it and disembowelled him with one sweep of its claw before he could fire again. The other beasts charged with it, scythe-talons and claws glinting in the lamp-light.

The men fought bravely, but farming tools and lasgun clubs could do little when faced against the lethal killing machines. The men were outnumbered and were dropping like flies. One man spun around with his farming scythe, but a chitin-blade came down on it, shearing it in two, as a claw punched through his ribcage. Another was blasting away at point-black range with his autogun, but when he tried to reload a pair of scythe-talons ripped into his shoulders, lifting him up and hurling him away into the foliage.

With every second, the circle of lamplight was dwindling, and isolated glows were extinguished. One last desperate radio call was made, and then the men of Icarus were gone.

“Monsters! Help, monsters! [Static]veryone away! [Gunfire]agh!”

Galactic History of the World of Icarus Tertia
Many believed that Behemoth was the first hive fleet to enter the galaxy, but they were wrong. Another fleet had entered in 532.M40, a scout fleet, much smaller than others. It entered lower than the galactic rim, where it encountered the human world of Caesirius and promptly bombarded the planet, eviscerating the Space Marines of the Iron Praetorians chapter at the end of a grisly 5-day siege where not a single Space Marine of the Battle Company stationed there slept for 120 hours. The biomass of the once proud agri-world was absorbed into the fleet and the barren world was left to spin round it’s sun as a deserted rock.

There was no contact with other Imperial worlds about this until much later, after the Tyranids attacked Tyran, but by then events surrounding this mysterious hive fleet had gone on. Soon after it devoured Caesirius it came across the Craftworld of Iybraesil in the Icarus system, whose Farseers had prophesised the coming of a great Beast. The hive fleet it was obliterated by the well trained crews of the Eldar ships. One last ship was left to die as it fell to the surface of one of the planets…one of the gravest mistakes that Iybraesil made.

The ship screamed through the atmosphere and cannoned into the ground, with such force that it buried half of the ship in the earth and snow. Soon the snows covered it, but inside, the heart was still beating.

The Surface of Icarus Tertia
Buried deep beneath the snow are soils and earths enormously rich in minerals and other elements. Underground rivers pick up these minerals as they rush past and through the earth, where they reach the seas, evaporate, condense and precipitate, as snow, onto the land. The minerals provided everything that animals on Icarus needed.

Humanity’s Second Encounter with the Beasts of Icarus
Only weeks after the slaughter on the mountainside, Imperial colonising fleets entered the Icarus system. Icarus Seconda and Icarus Quadria were marked out as ideal worlds, and colonisation began. But the Imperial Guard force tasked with the protection of the settlers were uncomfortable with the presence of Icarus Tertia. The commanding officer, Captain Drake, announced that he would settle their fears, and took a landing craft to Icarus Tertia.

With him were 2 full squads of Imperial Stormtroopers, the finest troops under his command, and his personal retinue, 25 men in total. Only 7 of them would survive.

This is a well thought-out background. I like it. I take it you wrote this, Subzero?

Yeah.

I was writing some interesting fluff about my Nids, but it means that if I want to play to the fluff I can't use the 3 Biovores and 2 Zoanthropes I have.

At the moment I'm writing the next bit.

3 guesses at what the 'daemon' is.

The Vid-log of Stormtrooper Sgt Bran
[Vid-log begins]

[The camera moves upwards sharply and over to the window of the lander. Outside there is a raging blizzard as the craft nears 20m above ground. Several grey objects cling to the ground below in the blizzard. The camera jolts as the craft lands, then turns to face 9 men dressed in heavy armour.]

“Alright boys, load up,” a voice orders.

[The men stand up and check their weapons. One has a flamethrower, a tank on his back displaying a skull and crossbones. The lander door slowly opens, revealing the full power of the blizzard, and the men slowly walk out, forcing their way against the howling winds. The camera follows their movement, looks down as the wearer checks his own weapons, and then moves out into the storm.]

“Sergeant! Take your men round that side of the installation, and move in on it when I say!” Someone shouts above the wind.

“Alright, you heard what the captain said, circle the perimeter!” The first voice yells.

[The 9 Stormtroopers push forward, and the camera follows them. Another 15 men are moving onwards off to the right. The camera slowly draws nearer to the settlement, and as it does it appears that there is a marked boundary surrounding it, a metal wall with spikes of wood and metal hammered through it from the other side. A few feet away the wall is bent inwards, broken.]

“Something musta hit that at a hell of a speed to smash through,” a trooper shouts.

[An arm points from somewhere beneath the camera at long claw marks and gashes long the damaged section.]

“Look! You think that something that can do this would bother trying to smash it down by running at the barrier? It probably slashed right down the wall and just pushed!” The Sergeant calls.

[One Stormtrooper bends forwards and examines the gashes and the split wall as the snow falls rapidly around the others, who are aiming their weapons at the crack.]

“Sergeant, move in wherever you can. The wall round here has been smashed down completely. Looks like a stampede pushed it down,” the captain’s voice comes through a micro-bead.

“Move in!” Bran bellows above the wind that isn’t so much a howling blast as something solid forcing its way into the ears with a sledgehammer.

[The camera moves forwards again, through the broken wall, and the barrel of a Boltgun swings into view as the wearer brings his weapon round. There is nothing there but the buildings. The camera swivels round as the other Stormtroopers come through, keeping their weapons ready, then back to the buildings. It advances steadily, between two of the buildings, and a flicker of light briefly appears. The camera stops turning and goes back. Again there is a point of light further ahead. Moving forward faster now, there is the crunch of boots on snow as the others keep up. The light is coming from a window, but is irregular.]

“Someone’s home? Lets find out!” Bran shouts.

[The camera moves forwards again, through the doorway and out of the harsh weather. It turns left and right, and then notices the source of the light: a flickering electric lamp, made by humans. The camera stops for a few seconds, still pointed at the lamp, then moves onwards, through another door. A working lamp gives a good light of the ghastly scene: blood coats the floor, and an old man with white hair is lying on a bed, his hands pressed together on his chest in the sign of the Aquila, wearing bloodstained clothes that have been pierced 3 times in the abdomen and once in the legs. A scream floats in from outside, followed by a second punctuated by gunfire. The camera rushes out to the troopers, who are standing in a semi-circle around the door, guns raised.]

“What the hell is going on?” Bran yells above the rising wind.

[The camera turns right as something dark comes round the corner of the building. The creature leaps and manages to stab its talons right through the body of one trooper and out the other side before it’s blown apart by Hellgun and Bolter fire. The dead trooper stumbles backwards against the house and slides to the floor, and then stops breathing.]

“Follow me!” Bran shouts.

[The camera jolts up and down as Bran runs around the corner. There is a brood of as yet unencountered creatures of the Gaunt genus rushing through the buildings, which stops when the men arrive. Another scream, far off, and the Tyranids open fire with their Spinefists as the Stormtroopers open fire with their Hellguns. The air is filled with projectiles travelling each direction, and the wearer dives to the right, firing his Bolter as he does so. 2 Stormtroopers die, one from the concentrated fire of 3 gaunts, the diamond bullets ripping into his body and smashing through his armour, the other the victim of a direct shot the face from a massive cannon the length of a Gaunt that one of them was carrying. A fireball erupts from the end of the squad’s Flamer, engulfing 3 Gaunts, and the Hellguns down another 5. The camera is briefly upside-down as the sergeant rolls and takes out another Gaunt with his Bolter. The remaining Gaunts turn and run, and are gunned down in a hail of lasblasts.]

“Damnit! Are they alright?” Bran shouts.

[A hand gestures towards the fallen troopers. Another shakes his head, and there is a growl from very near the camera. The Captain appears in the snowstorm, running towards them, but then something leaps out, grabs him in mid air, lands, and rips him in half with its claws. Two sinewy whips connected to the creature near the other arms lash at the two halves of the captain, letting his blood drip onto the snow. The camera turns to the others, who are wide eyed with shock.]

“Open fire!” The sergeant bellows.

[The Hellguns blaze at the monster, and the sergeant reloads his Boltgun and joins in, but it leaps out of the way and behind another building and only 4 shots hit, including one from the Boltgun. The camera turns away from the grisly death, and, as one man, the survivors run for it, back the way they came and out through the tear in the barrier. The wearer is behind as they get back into the lander, and as it starts to take off the giant beast charges out of the snow and grabs onto the closing door with the whips. The wearer steps back and blasts at them with his Bolter, and they uncurl as the door shuts completely.]

“Genestealers and Gaunts…that world is a goddamn hive,” Bran mutters.

[Vid-log ends]

Inquisitor Zechariah
Zechariah was a member of the Ordo Xenos, who had made it his duty to study and defeat the Tyranid race. He had examined carcasses of Tyranids, finding out what their weak points were, and put this knowledge into practice against Hive Fleet Kraken.

It was Zechariah who the Imperial Guard in the Icarus system asked for aid. He dismissed their plea, but something caught his attention. A Genestealer had been sighted that had whips in addition to claws, something that had not previously been seen before. It was also incredibly resilient compared to others from its species, surviving a direct hit to the torso from a Boltgun, which would normally eliminate a normal Genestealer. A specimen such as this would be a rare one.

Zechariah requested the aid of an Ordo Xenos Deathwatch kill team, and then set out for the Icarus system.

Deathwatch Kill Team
There was a flash of lightning on Icarus. Then another, a screech-and the Deathwatch kill team completed teleportation.

“Brother Marius?” captain Helius asked one who was scanning with his auspex.
“No sir. The area is Tyranid free,” came the reply.
“Brother Phaedron, Brother Kranovic, keep your Flamers ready at all times, and burn any Tyranid organism that you see, Brother Quetus, if you see an Genestealer that wields lash whips, target it immediately,” the captain ordered.

There were nods of recognition, and the kill team moved on through the snow. After a few minutes they sighted the abandoned settlement, and the crushed wall. A faint trail of blood meandered its way across the ground, towards the mountain. After performing the final machine rites, they headed up the foreboding, black mountain. It was getting dark when they came across stumps in the snow and ice, which were beating and pulsating like hearts. Phaedron and Kranovic began burning them, the fires melting the snow around them and turning it into slush.

“Phaedron, Kranovic, keep your weapons at your side,” Helius commanded. “There are simply too many of these abominations to purge without expending all your ammo.”
“Yes sir. I will sir,” Kranovic answered.

The Deathwatch trooped upwards, through the forest of pumps, the mutant flora. Helius could barely conceal his disgust at the foul alien scum. They were trying to take over this world, and they would not achieve that goal. He was distracted from these thoughts as Marius’ auspex began to beep madly. Turning round and drawing his power sword, he was just in time to see a cloud of diamond splinters erupt from the flora. One smashed Marius’ eye, driving deep into his brain, but the others pattered harmlessly off the mighty Power Armour that they were wearing. Roaring with anger, Kranovic unleashed the full fury of his Flamer on the three Spinegaunts that had killed Marius.

Helius ran forwards as two more Gaunts with Scything Talons charged into Phaedron. Swinging at them with his Power Sword, he beheaded one and sliced another in half, but as he did so it lunged forwards and impaled Phaedron, its toxin soaked blades digging into his throat and cutting off his respiratory system. Looking for fresh targets he saw two Genestealers rip out Weiss’ hearts as he slumped backwards, and some huge Gaunt cannon into Andric. He brought his Bolter round and caught its head, knocking it off balance, and Andric drove his lightning claw upwards, tearing the foul beast apart in a shower of ichor.

Then a projectile skimmed across his helmet and hit Andric in the face and killing him instantly. Diving to the right is he turned, Helius dodged another bullet from the unseen Tyranid and fired his Bolter wildly into the pump organisms. Something fell back onto him as the Impalergaunt fell from its perch. They body of Kranovic was hauled off of him and he rolled away as the clawed Gaunt pushed Kranovic away and sighted Helius. It leapt, and as it did so he lodged his power sword into the ground and stepped backwards, blasting at a Genestealer with his Bolter. There was an inhuman screech as the Gaunt impaled itself on the sword, and he picked it up and tossed it away.

Then a Genestealer with whip-like appendages entered the melee. It tore Emeric apart and grabbed Quetus with its whips. Struggling against the vice like grip to fire his Heavy Bolter, he was dragged slowly but inexorably to his death. Knowing that this must be the lethal Genestealer he had be informed of, Helius concentrated his fire on it, but most of the bullets bounced off its hide. Saul added his firepower to Helius’, but the monstrous Genestealer jumped over the bullets and landed on Saul, ripping his helmet off with its claws and severing his neck. The other Genestealer finished off the last member of his squad, and the monster leapt towards Helius as he asked to be teleported to the ship.

Helius’ body appeared in the teleport bay, ripped into four pieces by the monster of Icarus.
