Greetings my Hive Siblings!

Well, I haven't exactly been resting on my laurels since I completed the Hydra-pattern Dom for Accommodator. I have been diligently working away on the next stage of my desluggification/plastic carnifex initiative that started with the Exocrine. This time:

The Dactylis!

Once I had finished the Exocrine, I had decided to give it to Moloch as a gift for his friendship over the years. However, then Ms. Moloch got a hold of it and did a fantastic job with the paint. Then came the wonderful experience of winning a Demon with it at GD Germany 2006. In their kindness, Mr and Ms Moloch decided that they could not accept the model since it had been my first Demon (plus, Ms Moloch has already got about twelve Demons to her name, cluttering up her shelves!).

As repayment for their kindness and because I really wanted to give Moloch an original creation of mine, I vowed that I would make him an Exocrine of his own to replace the first. And I vowed it would be better than the first!

So, on the long drive home from Koln to Berlin, we conceived the beast. Instead of another Exocrine, I would make a Dactylis--the old spore-lobbing slug from good ol Epic. Since it would be carrying around a large clutch of spore mines, it would need to be heavily armoured--armoured enough to take a baneblade shell, point blank.

We came up with the idea of a "unified armoured front" of moveable armoured plates, much like the Tyrant Guard concepts Warren Beattie/Verm1s came up with originally. When the creature hunkered down to fire, it deployed these plates attached to its arms, and they would link up to the back carapace to form the unified armoured front. When the beast had to move, it could pull back the plates and lumber on to the next firing position.

Once these ideas had been percolating in my head for a few months, I set to work on the beast and have been working on it on my own for the last couple of months. The only people that ever really saw it in progress were those who visited the Warpshadow table at GD Toronto this year. However, now the beast is finished, so I can post some photos of the various phases of construction.

I hope you all enjoy it and that someone can draw some inspiration from it!

First,
The very boring Phase 1

Wow, seeing it all put together.. yup, nice. You shoulda cast the whole thing. A battey of those sitting in your deployment zone would certainly cause consternation.... 8-)

So. Certainly this is not the end of the creature's story, is it? I mean, final stqge of the WIP - must mean there is more?!?!

That is beautiful Mr Pink! Just beautiful.

How come you kept it all to yourself until now? I know we would all have been cheering you on as you made him. :P

haha! a remake of the ol' tomato chuckers.. that's awesome :D

makes sense now all the little clues Mr Pink has been leaving around the forums finally come together :P

I love the greening on the carapace.. did you have something to define the shape of the carapace on the arms first like plasticard? I'd imagine it'd be quite difficult to get such defined shapes without something to work ontop of.

definately looking forward to seeing it in future. :)

It's even better than desluggify 1.0 ! front view is amazing with massive shield plates, etc...

Really, man, you have to cast them, i want to buy one !

WOW!

great work, can´t believe that you have hidden this thing for so long.
a really cool piece for a gift.

but i have to dare to tell you about a few things i don´t like on this very nice model.

*the lower carapace shields look to identical for me, i´d add some more texture to one (or both of em) to make them look different.

*the guns look really cool, but you have done better here, i think there is some texture missing (maybe guitarwire blended in on the sides) and something to make the gunhole more gribbly.

*aother thing on then gunbarrels is that they look a bit "set on", they don´t seem to grow out of the body naturally.

i hope that those critics are ok for you.

harald

That is an acceptable present if I do say so myself. ;)

No, seriously, I cannot stress enough how honoured I am to lay my claws onto such a model. And I still fondly remember our energised discussion in the car.

I am madly in love with the whole concept behind it. Some people say that Gunfexes and shooting is not niddy enough. True, but if you do it in style it does not seem so unfitting anymore.

And, taking Harald`s comments into the equation, I think the Exocrine and the Dactylis seem to come from different schools of design.
While the `Crine has many details to make the model complex, the Dactylis is very smooth and streamlined.

I shall be looking forward to finally getting the model.
But sadly it will not be done for the second Tyrannic War...............
