So I've been scratchbuilding a Tyranid anti-air beasty. The idea is that it uses a powerful bio-electric cannon to zap aircraft out of the sky.

Sorry for the potato-quality pics by the way, I had to take these with a PS Vita.

Image

Main body. Mostly milliput built around foil.

Image

The cannon. Those bits of wire will be painted like arcs of electricity.

Image

The end of the cannon, with loads of focusing spines for directing the bio-lightning.

Image

Head, made from the enhanced senses Carnifex head.

Image

Carapace plating. Where the vents should be there will be huge electrical spines, and right on its back will be a great big gribbly organic generator of some kind.

Image

Front carapace, made from 2 spine bank Carnifex carapaces spliced together.

Image

Ribs. You have no idea what a pain to sculpt these are.

Image

Rear leg, made from a scything talon and some Trygon parts. Do note that it will be facing backwards for the sake of proper Tyranid anatomy.

Image

The pelvis and tail, made from a hacked up Tyrant pelvis.

I know I'm no Mr Pink, and I know the pics really suck, but I think she's coming along quite nicely. Question is, what name should I give this new genus?

Anyway, thoughts?

Hey, I really like this concept and you're getting great results with that milliput! It's always great to see completely new classes of nids taking shape.

If there's one tip that might help out, it'd be to change up the milliput for some apoxie sculpt. My favourite putty for doing big stuff like this is to mix about 33% procreate or greenstuff with 76% apoxie sculpt. That's something I picked up here from one of Hydra's posts a while back. You get a clay like putty that can take good detail, isn't too expensive, and can bulk out large shapes and be worked with fairly fast.

Another old time warpshadow tip - for lubricant on your sculpting tools, nivea moisturiser is pretty great.

Thanks! I'll have to see where I can get some Apoxie Sculpt- I haven't seen it in shops anywhere but I assume it's fairly easy to get in the UK. I should really get some Kneadite as well- it's AFAIK identical in every way to Green Stuff (except much cheaper) and I much prefer the consistency to Milliput. I think I'll try that mixing technique you mentioned.

I did actually try the Vaseline technique, strangely it didn't seem to work very well. Maybe I'm using the wrong kind (I'm using hand cream out of a little tube thingy)?

Try using nivea moisturizer. It's mostly water based and disappears quickly - Vaseline is oil based and you'll need to wash it off to make paint or putty stick on top.

When I was in the UK, I found apoxie sculpt on ebay. It looks like amazon.co.uk now ships it direct from aves, the manufacturer in the states. It costs about 45 quid for 4 lb, but that would last you for a couple of years... or you could start with 1lb for about 17 quid. I like to use the natural colour, though I'm sure white works fine also.

Quick update: just got my order of Apoxie Sculpt, and it is sex in putty form. I love this stuff. Hopefully I'll get some pics up of the latest work on the model soon.

And it last forever too. My tubs are a few years old and still good as ever!

It's going alright. I'm waiting for the latest bit of putty to dry before I take any more pics. I have 4 of the limbs on though.

Update time!

So a lot of work has gone on since the last update. I've attached the pelvis to the body, stuck on 4 of the 6 limbs and done more putty work. Still very much WIP of course.

I apologize for potato quality pics...

Rib work continues. The greenish yellow is milliput, the grey is sexy sexy Apoxie Sculpt.

The WIP front limbs I'm building for her (which will be painted separately). I'm going for a kind of shovel claw look, as though it used the massive appendages the dig in and entrench itself.

I have an idea for the Genus name- Galvator, or possibly Voltacrine. Does it work?

I quite like it Squigsquasher. The sclpted carapace looks deccent and I think that is the most important piece of a tyranid sculpt. :)

I reckon you could really help the back legs by cutting off the scything talon 'thumbs'. That stops them looking like re-purposed hands.

That's a good idea. I'll do that.

My vote's for Voltacrine! I like the idea, and execution is coming along nicely. I can't wait to see her in color!

I like the frontlimbs. They look brutal and somehow funny at the same time. They kind of remind me of some older biovore frontlimbs.

My vote is for Teslacrine!

The front limbs look like they'll fit really nicely and the beast looks like it's lunging forward.

How are you going to fill the gap around the waist and back of the carapace? You could add some "battery organs"... not exactly sure what those would look like... my best guess would be to look at electric eel heads for design cues:

Maybe someone else will have a good idea... or an existing tyranid bit from past or present that generates electricity that could be blown up in size!
