Hi all

As we all already know GW didn't release Mycetic Spores

Anyone know alternatives? Are they good?

I've found

I bought four from here, and I like them better than most - plus, they are really big so they block a lot of LOS:

BO(V)BZ found one of the better ones, and I think the Puppets of War one would be the easiest to convert and modify.

That said, a scratchbuilt one here:

Is about the best you'll find anywhere and most closely matches my view of what these things should look like. Granted, that one's a bit too large to be official (I've heard somewhere that 4" is the limit for a diameter, so I guess I won't be dropping beach balls on the board to block LOS).

They seem to be the most common option, but it bears saying for completeness that Mega Bloks Plasma Hatchers are a great base for Mycetic Spores.

With a tiny bit of conversion they can easily represent all the appropriate biomorph gear. Here's mine (still very WIP). Even sideways in a 'crashed' position they fit on a Trygon-sized base, and they'll be finished up to look as though they're partially buried with the ripper tentacles emerging from the rubble.

Best part? Under $10 each!

Here are my take on them, scratch-sculpted from Apoxie Sculpt.

I've always wanted to get around to getting them cast up, but I wasn't sure if anyone would be interested in using them to rep Mycetic Spores.

I've always really loved that design Pinky. Seems like just the thing to spear through the atmosphere, armoured and fairly streamlined.

Also that one you're working on Terrorfex, whoa, it has some sick details! Not sure about that vomited mass of tentacles, but the spore itself looks badass.

I am using the Plasma Hatchers myself at the moment. Proxying the Mycetic Spores until the actual GW come out. If not, then I will keep using them for my games. They look the part anyway. I like how Pekel actually converted them to be half buried which make it more authentic

the spore is from a russian artist. His studio is called Hydracast.

His is the best in production. I'd still rather see one splatted, but I might have to make it myself.

I kind of want to make three of them, all with interchangeable weapon parts. One splatter, one kind of laying on its side (like in the codex picture), and maybe one other pose.

Then I'd have to figure out how to cast them.

In the interest of contributing to this thread to give folks some more ideas, as well as out of a drive to not make MORE threads in M&P, I thought I'd post my most recent run at mycetic spores to this thread.

Though I am still intending to return to my previous design, posted above, I haven't had the steam to tackle a full resculpt yet, so I wanted to see if I could whip up some quick stand-ins to use in game as Mycetic Spores.

Some of you may remember my forays into Tyranid Terrain, and how they culminated in the Infestation of Casavant PrimeTyranid table project that Accommodator and I undertook for Games Day Toronto 2008. Well, for that project Accommodator cast up a pile of my Tyranid Barricade sculpts:

Well, I've had a bunch of those bad boys kicking around ever since we finished up the table, so I put my thinking cap on and wondered if there wasn't any way that I could use them to represent some crashed Mycetic Spores. Fortunately I also had some thick plasticard, spare spray insulation foam, and Apoxie Sculpt kicking around, and once combined, they came out like this:

That tail-looking bit sticking out the top is meant to be where the spore's ranged weapon will mount. The idea for these is that most of the spore has embedded itself if the dirt that has been plowed up in front, and only some of it is sticking up out of the ground. Sure, they don't block very much line of sight, but as a quick and dirty solution for spores, I think they work. I'm particularly happy with how the gribbly internal detail turned out:

They still need some tentacles, and I have to finish up the weapon mounts, but I used them in a game on Friday to proxy spores, and they fit the bill pretty well. Also, I know I'm late to the party on this one, but I used a Doom+Spore for the first time in that game against a whole pile of Ld8 Eldar, and OH MAN did it ever clean up!!

Anyway, here's hoping they give people some more ideas about how to represent Mycetic Spores

I used my new Doom (elsewhere in the forum...) for the first time on Thursday against a load of Ld 10 4+ invo Thousand Sons. It's not so useful against troops with good Ld and invulnerable saves, but it was still a fire magnet and useful Shadows in the Warp bubble to drop into the middle of the enemy.

Also... it's really fun. Don't forget to activate it at the start of the enemy shooting phase ;)

Here's my pod, to add to the discussion:

Image

Get a bag of ornamental gourds around halloween time... let em dry out for a year and a half and throw out any that go moldy. Then break off the end with the stalk... add an hours worth of green stuff and some magnetized wire tentacles, scatter broken bits of the gourd top on the base and you're done! Quick and uber cheap spore pod!

If you're looking to go cheap, I made these out of plastic easter eggs, wrapped in heavy duty aluminum foil, then painted. I'm not crazy about the bases, but I made these like 10 years ago.

Damn clever use of aluminum foil; those veins look pretty cool!
