Well, though it might seem otherwise, I have not, exactly, been sitting here twiddling my thumbs for the last six months.

Some of you may remember that I took it upon myself to take a stab at sculpting/kitbashing a Dominatrix from a Hierodule last year (a trend that Hydra was the brave pioneer of). I didn't have any faith in my ability to do so, but Accommodator did, and he bravely put up the funds for the model so that I could try my hand at it and he could be the owner of the fruits of my labour. I'm very glad that he did put so much faith in me because, in doing so, he succeeded in teaching me something about myself. The fruit of that project came in the form of my own take on the Hydra Dom:

http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... _.jpg.html
http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleetFenrir/Dom/done/

That was all well and good, and once I was done I moved on to working on the Dactylis. However, it wasn't long until another board member came sniffing around, looking for a Dominatrix of their own. Since I had recently finished the Dactylis for Moloch and didn't have anything on my plate, I accepted the project, had the member send me all the pieces required, and I have been working away on it, on and off, in secret since September. I didn't think too much of it and set out to create a copy of Accommodator's first Dominatrix.

However, somewhere along the way, the beast seemed to take on a life of its own, and it steadily started to differentiate itself from the model I had created for Acc. When I had started, I was worried that I wouldn't be able to do as well as I had done with Acc's since I no longer had the creature in front of me. It quickly became apparent that the work on the Dactylis and sculpting pointers from Hydra had taught me a couple of things.

Now that I'm finished the beast and I can sit back and look at it, I am faced with the realization that D3 turned out much more refined than D2. Through that extra experience, as well as some input from Hydra when he was here in Feb-March, I was able to create a further evolved version of the Dom.

So, yes, while Hydra was busily working away on the Miterax/Project Titan at my table, I was working on something of my own across the table from him. He even posted a photo of it, but succeeded in distracting everyone with the dazzling detail of his creation in the foreground. Let's see if you can find it in this sneak peek

More from me later.

Wow, Mr. Pink. I have never seen the D2 before, it turned out really awesome scary-as-hell. Also, as soon as you mentioned Hydra staying at your house it clicked in my mind that Hydra must have taken a picture of it in the background of his Miterax photos, and I was right :P

I hope work on your Dominatrix continues to go smoothly and that we'll be seeing more from you soon :D

On a side note. A Hydraphant is just a Dominatrix without a symbiote am I correct?

Hydradom? Which creature are you referring to? Hydra's conversion most definitely has a symbiotic rider.

As for my own Dom, I started by cutting off the Acid spay, tail, and back vents from the thing, while also cutting down a good deal of the armour. When Hydra created his, he chose to plaster over extra armour bits, but I was trying for something more streamlined.

In the following photos you can also see how I did some damage to the rear arm sockets. This was intentional since I was planning to cover over them and move the Dom's arm sockets further forward on the body in since I would be extending the whole length of the thing.

http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... 3.jpg.html
http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... 4.jpg.html

I also did some damage to the back at the top. This is where the Symbiote would reside. However, I had something much more complicated in mind for the symbiote than I had done last time--an idea inspired by Hydra's Dakkadule

I elected to go with a split jaw, just as Hydra had on his. This is easily accomplished by cutting down the middle of the Hierodule lower jaw, spreading the pieces and regluing them, then filling in the gap with GS.

http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... 5.jpg.html

Here's a shot of where I plastered over the rear arm socket with Apoxie Sculpt.

http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... 9.jpg.html

Next I added a little more Apoxie Sculpt to build the rough substructure for the back plates and neck:

http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... _.JPG.html
http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... _.JPG.html

I started work on the monstrous Razor Claws that the thing uses to balance itself and to tear tanks apart! These were going to be done entirely from scratch, so I started with some wire armature and Apoxie sculpt to reinforce it.

Finally, I started work on a similar tail tip to last time, with the makes-sense-to-me downswepped Scythes:

Three doms already... Yikes. And built over FW models. Yikes!

Looking forward to seeing this one. Are the links in the putty topic for this? To be frank, after seeing those and these, I don't think you need a heirodule as a base.

Haha. I meant, in the context of the Epic system. There is a unit called a Hydraphant which if I remember correctly is just a Dominatrix without a symbiote-rider.

Though the you can take that with a pinch-of-salt.

Regardless! That looks pretty good right now. I want to see the more advanced photos though, when it really starts coming together.

So far I really like the Scything-tail. Though I don't think the first photo link is working properly... or something.

Hmm. I think if I ever make a Dominatrix, i'd like to have the symbiote rider attached magnetically so that I can field it as either a Dominatrix or a Hydraphant, and then especially be able to show if the Rider has been killed.

Excellent work as always from the brood nest of Mr. Pink and Hydra. Man, the stuff that comes out of your workshops always inspires me. An awesome start to what I'm sure will be another incredible model, keep us posted.

Very nice job. I think converting FW models is probably around the same difficulty as balancing on a steel cord and trying to walk to the US.

That's a prertty cool idea, though, from an aesthetic/modeling perspective, it would make it difficult to integrate the rider.

Thank you all for your interest thus far. I hope the project can measure up to your expectations!!

Oh, just so we're clear, the Dom is fully finished, I'm just posting the photos in serial posts like this so I can explain the process I went through in managable chunks.

So here's the next chunk:

This time, SYMBIOTES!

There were a number of symbiotes built into the Dom. The first was the ripper tongue:

http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... _.jpg.html
http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... _.jpg.html

Not much explanation there, so we'll move on to the ovipositor tail tip. Last time everyone was commenting on how the tail tip looked like an ovipositor, so I actually tried to make it look a little more like one this time around:

http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... _.jpg.html
http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... _.jpg.html

There was also the bio-cannon weapons symbiote. I based it on the FW Hive Tyrant Venom Cannon, though it didn't come out as long as lean. Still I think I picked up some elements of it. Personally, I think I improved a bit on the simplistic shapes of the cannons for the Exocrine and the Dactylis. I started from a plasticard substructure, built it up with Apoxie sculpt, then skinned on the detail with Green Stuff:

Cannon Substructure:
http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... _.jpg.html
http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... _.jpg.html
http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... _.jpg.html
http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... _.jpg.html

Putty work on the Cannon
http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... 3.jpg.html
http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... _.jpg.html
http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... 7.jpg.html
http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... 6.jpg.html
http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... 5.jpg.html
http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... n.JPG.html

While we're on the standard weapons symbiotes, here is how the Razor Claws progressed I built the detail using GS and adding Fex spineback bits for the actual claws:

http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... _.jpg.html
http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... _.jpg.html
http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... _.jpg.html
http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... _.jpg.html
http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... _.jpg.html
http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... _.jpg.html

Finished:
http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... 8.jpg.html
http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... 9.jpg.html
http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... 0.jpg.html

When it came to scything talons, I was of two minds. If I was going to use the standard STs from the model, I needed to plate them so they looked a little more modern. However, I also wanted to try making some big, hooked talons out of plasticard...so I did both:

http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... _.jpg.html
http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... _.jpg.html
http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... _.jpg.html
http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... _.jpg.html
http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... 4.jpg.html
http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... _.JPG.html
http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... _.JPG.html

In the end, scale creep got a bit out of hand on my scratchbuilt jobbies, so I elected to with with the beast's standard STs.

http://album.warpshadow.com/v/HiveFleet ... s.JPG.html

The last Symbiote would be the rider. I did a lot of work on him and his integration into the overall beast, and this post is getting to be novel length, so I'll save the rider for my next post.

Mr Pink, you certainly have done it again! An amazing model, and thank you very much for taking the time to take so many pictures. I am soon to embark on sculpting something large of my own, but don't have much experience. Your tutorial type photos are super helpful.

Can't wait to see what you do with the gunner symbiote! Once again, fantastic work.

Marvellous! Everything. :) I imagine the Dom roaring, the tongue shooting out into the face of an SM or someone, and the ripper gibbering like Salacious Crumb. Before biting his face off.
Pity you didn't use the hooked talons, even if they were oversized. They work very well on Hel.
